Hi, I’m James S. Lowe lll, and I love what I do! I love to make a difference, and I love to see both the quick, short-term changes and the long-term, permanent changes that counseling provides. What could be more rewarding? We’re a locally owned business. I’ve been a professional counselor for over 20 years, and I have my master's degree. I provide counseling for adolescents and adults with an emphasis on alcoholism, drug addiction, behavioral addictions such as gambling, sex addictions, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, anger issues, and other common mental health issues. A large part of my success can be traced to the fact that I use the latest therapy techniques and that I care deeply about each person I see. Your success in dealing with your challenges is always on my mind. I thrive on seeing you happy again.
Take the first step. If you have a problem and have made it your personal goal to get rid of it, schedule an appointment with JSL Counseling Services, Inc. The courage to change is the first step towards your recovery. Whether your challenge is specific or general in nature, our counselor will do his best to help you. If we don’t have experience handling a specific issue, we can direct you to another counselor.
Various Issues We Deal With:
My practice specializes in treating individuals, couples, and families, and I offer comprehensive services dealing with:
We understand that flexibility and accessibility are essential when it comes to receiving mental health support. That's why we offer both in-person and telehealth treatment options to meet your needs and preferences.
Both treatment options are designed to provide you with the support and guidance you need, whether you choose to meet in person or connect remotely. Our goal is to ensure that you have access to the care you need in the way that best suits your lifestyle.
CBT is grounded in the belief that it is a person’s perception of events, rather than the events themselves, that determines how he or she will feel and act in response. CBT can help with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance dependency, persistent pain, disordered eating, sexual issues, and anger management issues. Most people with clearly defined behavioral and emotional concerns tend to reap the benefits of CBT. If any of the above issues resonate with you, I encourage you to try cognitive-behavioral therapy.
With CBT, you’ll be able to adjust the thoughts that directly influence your emotions and behavior. This adjustment process is referred to as cognitive reconstructing, which happens through different CBT techniques. Some CBT techniques are journaling, challenging beliefs, relaxation, meditation, mindfulness, and social, physical, and thinking exercises.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is much more than sitting and talking about whatever comes to mind during a session. CBT sessions are structured to ensure that the therapist and the person in treatment are focused on the different goals of each session, which in turn ensures that each and every session is productive.
If you or someone you know would benefit from cognitive-behavioral therapy, please contact me today. I would be happy to speak with you about how I may be able to help.
Is anxiety taking over your life? Does it feel like you can’t control it, no matter how hard you try? Have you already tried therapy but found it ineffective? If this sounds like you, I’m confident I can help. My practice offers the most effective forms of treatment to get the relief from anxiety that you deserve. Often, these are the symptoms of anxiety:
Nervousness, restlessness, or being tense; feelings of danger, panic, or dread; rapid breathing or hyperventilation; increased or heavy sweating; trembling or muscle twitching; weakness or lethargy; difficulty focusing on or thinking clearly about anything other than the thing you’re worried about; insomnia; obsessions about certain ideas are a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder; and anxiety surrounding a particular life event or experience that has occurred in the past is a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Therapy can help you uncover the underlying causes of your worries and fears, learn how to relax, look at situations in a new, less frightening way, and develop better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills. If you suffer from an anxiety disorder, I invite you to contact me today for a free consultation.
EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy that uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. Therapists often use eye movements to facilitate bilateral stimulation. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life. EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories in such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of relational traumas, childhood abuse, and/or neglect. For a more detailed explanation, please visit EMDR Institute, Inc.
EMDR was originally established as helpful for PTSD, although it’s been proven useful for treatment in the following conditions: panic attacks, complicated grief, dissociative orders, disturbing memories, phobias, pain disorders, performance anxiety, addictions, stress reduction, sexual and/or physical abuse, body dysmorphic disorders, and personality disorders.
None of the above symptoms or experiences fit you? Do you experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Is there one or more dysfunctional beliefs that you hold about yourself that, on an intellectual level, you know are not true? If so, you may still be a good candidate for EMDR therapy. Contact me today for a free phone consultation to see if EMDR might help you release what no longer serves you.
Drug addiction symptoms and behaviors include, among others: feeling the need to use the drug regularly, which can be daily or multiple times a day; having intense urges for the drug over time; needing more of the drug to get the same effect; making certain that you maintain a supply of the drug; not meeting obligations and work responsibilities; doing things you wouldn’t normally do to get the drug, such as stealing; focusing more and more time and energy on getting and using the drug; experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using the drug; failed attempts to quit using the drug. If you can relate to any of the above symptoms or behaviors, it may be time to consider addiction counseling.
As an addiction counselor, I will address the symptoms of your addiction and the related areas of impaired functioning, and together we’ll structure the time and content of your ongoing recovery.
I believe that there are many paths to successful recovery that will work with your goals and desires and ensure you can make the life changes you want to make. Contact me today for a free consultation.
Are you feeling hopeless, isolated, and not your usual self? Do these thoughts often enter your mind? I am worthless and can’t do anything about it. I feel guilty for just wanting to eat, sleep, and be alone. I hate who I am these days. I can’t stop crying, which makes me want to stay away from others. I feel gut-wrenching pain, but no one understands. My life and the world around me are dark. I hate it, but I can’t change it.
If you have had any variation of these thoughts and don’t feel like your usual self, chances are you may be suffering from depression.
I want you to know that you are not alone and that there are people who can help. Many of my clients find relief in realizing that their struggle does not own them and that there are many options available to once again have hope for their lives.
I understand the social stigmas that come with the label of being depressed, and I thus aim to help clients sort out their environmental, biological, and circumstantial factors while offering support and care through a very dark time in their lives. If you are hoping to finally lighten this load and feel like yourself again, contact me today for a free consultation.
Cognitive skills are the essential mental capabilities that enable us to process information, learn, and interact with the world effectively. These skills encompass a wide range of functions, including attention, memory, perception, language, problem-solving, and decision-making.
They allow us to focus on tasks, recall information, interpret sensory input, communicate ideas, and tackle complex challenges. Developing strong cognitive skills is fundamental for academic success, professional achievement, and overall daily functioning.
By enhancing these abilities through practice and learning, individuals can improve their ability to think critically, make informed decisions, and adapt to new situations.
Relapse prevention is a critical component of the recovery process for individuals overcoming addiction or chronic behavioral issues.
This therapeutic approach focuses on identifying and addressing the triggers, thoughts, and behaviors that can lead to a return to substance use or other unwanted behaviors.
Relapse prevention aims to equip individuals with the tools they need to maintain long-term sobriety and make healthier choices by developing coping strategies, enhancing self-awareness, and fostering a supportive environment.
This proactive strategy emphasizes continuous self-monitoring, stress management, and the cultivation of a strong support network to ensure sustained recovery and improve overall well-being.

He is very flexible with appointments can always fit me in when work allows me the time to make it. Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
The difference is between someone who can do something and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way—teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better, you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths, which can help you accomplish your personal goals.
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say on a general FAQ page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
Please complete the form below to schedule an appointment. I will try my best to accommodate your request and will be in touch ASAP.
